Cover-Up Tattoos in Austin
Not every tattoo tells the story you want to carry forever. Whether it’s an old tattoo you’ve outgrown, a design that didn’t turn out as planned, or a piece connected to a different chapter of your life, a well-designed cover-up can transform it into something meaningful again.
Cover-up tattoos require more than just a great design — they require an understanding of how to work with existing ink, skin tone, placement, contrast, and composition. Sky Rockenbach specializes in creating custom cover-up tattoos in a variety of styles, using careful planning and artistic problem-solving to turn unwanted tattoos into artwork you’re proud to wear.
From small corrections to large-scale transformations, every cover-up begins with understanding what is possible and designing a solution that works with your existing tattoo rather than simply hiding it. Explore examples of healed and transformed cover-up work below, and see how old tattoos can become something completely new.
What works best?
For coverups, the easiest route is always to go bigger and with color. Another great option is to go for a design with lots of detail and texture. When planning for the image that will cover your pre-existing tattoo, look for things with these elements. Lots of times, just by distracting people attention away from the old design is all you need to do.
Every cover-up starts with a consultation. We’ll need to see the existing tattoo in person, talk through your goals, and figure out the best way to design over it effectively.
Cover-ups work best with detailed designs—things like flowers, fish, dragons, tigers with wings and flames—bold imagery that gives us room to hide the old tattoo without relying on solid black or oversized shapes. Most cover-ups do need to be larger than the original piece to work properly.
In some cases, it can take two passes to fully mask the old tattoo. But often, the first session is enough to transform the piece into something you’ll be proud to wear.

Sky’s studio is located within the Salon Lofts (Suite 160) business building, specifically in Loft 2. Upon entering the front doors, simply head to your left — Sky’s studio will be the second door on the left. This private and intimate space is ideal for an artist who works independently and by appointment only. To maintain a peaceful, focused atmosphere, the studio has a limited capacity, and it is kindly requested that no more than two clients be present at any given time.
